About

What do we talk about when we talk about animals? Taxonomic categories? Domesticated companions? Wildlife? Food? This Omeka site is created by Tufts University students from the class "Animals Crossing: Modern East Asian Literature and Media" offered by Professor Dingru Huang in the Department of International Literary and Cultural Studies. Here you will have a glimpse of how we explore the perceptions, imaginations, and utilizations of nonhuman animals in East Asian literature and media. In these exhibits, the nonhuman animal is at once treated as a shifting cultural motif, a recurring puzzle, and a critical method. We are not only thinking about animals, but also thinking with them, which enable us to interrogate familiar topics such as modernity and enlightenment, imperialism and colonialism, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, globalization, and environmental crises. In addition to thought-provoking discussions, you will also discover some original creative endeavors in conversation with existing masterpieces. Enjoy!
